1933 LAUNCESTON K.O CUP Final
HARROWBARROW & METHERELL 3-2 CALLINGTON
CUP FINAL BATTLE AT HURDON
HARROWBARROW FORWARDS' EXCELLENT DISPLAY
(By "SCARLETT RUNNER")
HARROWBARROW 3-2 CALLINGTON
Unique forward play, with comprehensive methods of football tactics, plus individual and collective excellence were the chief factors responsible for Harrowbarrow's victory over Callington, at Hurdon, Launceston, on Thursday evening, when they met in the final of the Launceston and District Knock-out Cup Competition. Supporters of the respective teams were present in large numbers, which testifies to the popularity of this competition in the district.
The standard of football was far above the ordinary. Rarely if ever did Harrowbarrow forwards miss a chance. With a little adjustment the Callington half line could be considerably strengthened for frequently did they pass weakly to the feet of the opposition. Callington tried hard, but it was soon obvious that the ordeal was taking its grim effect. Underhill, their brilliant centre forward was watched too tightly to enable him to make use of every opening, but in spite of this his performance was highly commendable.
From the beginning it was evident that the Callington defence had no organised plan to counter Harrowbarrow's attacking methods. In the circumstances Wright and Luke, especially the left-back, who kicked a good length, made a good job of a thankless task. Warrick, too, defended well although many of his well-intentioned passes went astray. He won admiration for his skill with the ball, which he kept on the ground, and when the tide was running against them he made many gallant efforts to force the play. On the whole the Callington attack, from which had been expected great things, gave a sorry display. With the exception of one brief period in the second half they did not strike one as being at all brilliant.
Harrowbarrow performed like a really good side from first to last; they employed clever, stylish methods in a very calculated manner which outwitted their opponents. The fact that three goals were scored is sufficient testimony to the part played by the attack, but successful as this line was, credit must also be given to the half-line behind them. They mastered the Callington attack in a quiet, but commanding manner, and set their own forwards on the move with choice passes.
Hutchings opened the scoring for Harrowbarrow and was followed closely by Pengelly, who increased the lead with a beautiful shot. Hutchings again netted, and just before the interval Underhill decreased the lead with a good shot, Rogers being hopelessly beaten. The only goal in the second half was scored from a penalty by Underhill, bringing the scores at full-time to 3 goals to 2.
During this half Luke (Callington) was forced to retire owing to injury. The cup was presented to the winning team by the Mayor of Launceston (Mr G.E.Trood)
