Altarnun win cup for the first time


In the final Altarnun took an early lead. Southgate failed to clear Ashley Burford's corner and Paul Wherry was on hand at the far post to head home. After 20 minutes Altarnun increased their lead when Nigel Harris brought down Louis Hill and Ashton Hair converted the resulting penalty.Five minutes before the interval Altarnun went 3-0 up with Ashton Hair scoring his second, this time from a free kick which 'keeper Nick Gerry could only help into the net.

The last 15 minutes saw Southgate dominate and they were rewarded when Simon Downing scored from close range.Altarnun held out to win the cup for the first time in the club's 45 year history.

This fulfilled an ambition for Pam and Mike Sandercock who have been associated with club for many years.

Player-manager "Dibbs" Davey reminded his players that he said he wouldn't retire until after he'd won the Launceston Cup and not necessarily when he won it!
